Summary
This review covers the most important aspects of traveller´s diarrhea, including epidemiology,
clinical features, microbiology, recommended treatment and prevention
measures. Frequently traveller´s diarrhea is due to bacterial infection. At present this
condition is very common but its incidence can be reduced with a few simple measures.
While fluoroquinolones are considered the treatment of choice, azithromycin and
rifamixin are also good alternatives. Nowadays there is no prevention of traveller´s diarrhea
except for a recently developed vaccine against cholera and a specific strain of
enterotoxigenic E. coli.
