Summary

Dictionaries and reference works on orthographic and grammatical rules are well known to provide the framework that regulates how a language works, yet paradoxically we are able to communicate without ever consulting any of these references. Through intuition, speakers of a language with a certain degree of competence are able to access most language rules and apply them properly. When communicative acts are of great importance, however, the correct

decoding of a message requires some assurance that the person who expresses a message is using a code that is shared by the intended receiver. It is therefore necessary to provide guidelines that help users of a language resolve their doubts so that communication will be successful. This brief article attempts to list the main Spanish language rules broken by

authors of scientific articles and to provide a guide to correct usage.
